Project: Warehouse conversion to 24/7 Gymnasium
Municipality: City of Maribyrnong
Designer:
This project involved the conversion of a disused warehouse into a 24 hour gymnasium. The use represents an emerging trend within the fitness industry for open all hours centres that are accessed outside core hours by a swipe-card, as opposed to the more conventional use model involving a staffed reception, organized fitness classes, and more limited hours. In many instances, convincing Councils to depart from traditional use models for such proposals can be challenging.
In this instance, the proposal was further complicated by trade interest objections from a rival business which complicated this application’s journey through Council, however the outcome was a planning permit for the gym without any onerous conditions.
